If you plan to go to Korea for a week-long vacation, like I did on Jeju Island, I recommend staying at a guesthouse. I found mine on Hostel World. I stayed at the B & B Pan Guesthouse in Jeju-si for 20,000 Won per night (about $20). The average hotel starts at 50,000 Won.
B & B Pan is located about 10 minutes from the airport by taxi. The taxi fare came to about 4,000 Won. Tell the taxi driver it is near Shinhan Bank (신한 은행).
There are three bathrooms, which include toilet, sink, and shower. Towels are also included, but they are small and not very soft.
Breakfast is included, which is the same every morning between 8 and 9: yogurt, toast, eggs, orange juice.
The owner, Martin, will wash your clothes and hang them out to dry.
The co-owner, Vincent, takes the guests on tours in his van for 30,000 Won. Each tour is a different coastal area (east, west, south). This is necessary, because despite it being an island, it is quite large, and takes about an hour to drive from one hot-spot to the next. A taxi would be too expensive, and a bus tour would limit your freedom.
The best part about staying in a shared room and going on tours with the other guests is forming friendships with people from all over the world. I met people from the Netherlands, Holland, Germany, France, England, Ireland, Austria, Australia, China, Singapore… We learned about each other’s cultures and languages, and bonded over our differences.
If you are looking for an affordable, well-rounded experience, this is it.
